TRUMAN,
HARRY S.
Memoirs by Harry S. Truman
"Within the first few months
I discovered that being a President is like riding a tiger. A man has to
keep on riding or be swallowed."
FIRST EDITIONS of both volumes
of Truman's Memoirs, association copies, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED by
Truman in each volume to Thomas C. Parker.
Inscribed in volume I: "To
Thomas C. Parker / Kindest Regards / from / Harry Truman 2/25/58"; in
volume II: "Best wishes to / Thomas C. Parker / from / Harry Truman
2/25/58". Thomas C. Parker (1905-1964) was the assistant director
of the WPA/FAP (1935-1940). During the critical 1939-1940 period, Parker
served as acting director while Holger Cahill was on sabbatical to work
on the New York World's Fair. Parker left the WPA/FAP to become director
of the American Federation of Arts (1940-1952).
Truman's Memoirs offers
detailed and intimate insights into some of the most dramatic events of
the 20th century. "By
1952, just before he announced his decision not to run again, only 25%
of the people thought he was doing a good job. Within a decade, however,
most American historians regarded him as one of the nation's greatest
presidents" (Encyclopedia Americana).
